Guardian Reports Story of Forced Sterilization in South Africa

December 1, 2011

On World AIDS Day 2011, The Guardian reported the story of Nonqaba Jacob, an HIV-positive woman and activist who was forcibly sterilized at Karl Bremer Hospital in South Africa while delivering her daughter via caesarian section.

Jacob told The Guardian: "Just before they wheeled me into the operating theatre I remember they gave me a form to sign. They said something about family planning. I signed the paper but I do not see why they had to give it to me when I was confused, just before the operation. They could have talked to me about it on my earlier visits.''

Her story is just one example of the broader problem of forced sterilization of women living with HIV in South Africa and across the globe.

The full story of Jacob’s forced sterilization is here.
